You Are More Beautiful Than You Think

A few years back I was involved with a real beauty Campaign by Dove Canada. I had the opportunity to learn a lot about the work Dove has been doing in regards to body image, self-esteem and perception — and also had the privilege of working with 10+ beautiful women from across the country who are role models for myself and many.

This afternoon a few girls from the #RunCrew posted this video from Dove on Facebook:

A powerful message to the community, a must watch for women {and men} and an exceptional well done by Dove.

I thought to myself – would I be as harsh on myself as these women were – yes, I believe I would.

My biggest cheerleader is a friend named Jen. She’s a high achieving corporate dynamo, exceptional public speaker, mom to the cutest kids in town, a beautiful force to be reckoned with and someone who gives with her whole heart. The two things I admire the most about her:

  1. She is completely transparent that she is always evolving – always growing – always learning. She’s not perfect and she doesn’t expect anyone else to be.
  2. She is every girls biggest champion. She is an advocate for women, a role model in the community and continually voices her on gender rights and equality.

Jen is always telling me to give myself a high five — and most importantly, be ok with where I’m at. I look at her like she’s crazy, respond to her texts with a ‘uh huh’ and at the end of the day — know she is right. I’m hard on myself and I know it.

Body image and self-esteem is a complicated one. Family, friends, the situations we’ve been through in life — all contribute to how we define ourselves. Our perception is shaped from our past — both good and bad. I admire campaigns like this one because they draw light on a real big problem that is taking place in our homes, schools and communities. I believe that negative body image is a disease and that education {and speaking up} is the way we will bring positivity and confidence back into women’s lives.

4% of women in the world consider themselves beautiful.

Proof that we’re too critical on ourselves. Proof that we’re battling insecurities. Proof that we’re getting caught up in negativity.

Change doesn’t happen overnight — but it does over time.

You’re not defined by your looks, you’re defined by your actions. The negativity, the hate, the criticism… let it all go.

Not because I told you to, because Jen told you to. She wouldn’t want anything less.

Turning Oppression into Opportunity

Years ago I read the book… tonight the documentary premieres on PBS. Half the Sky is about leaving the past and the past and paying attention to what is going on in the world — now. Women across the globe are pushing past societal norms and making change in their communities. Now it’s time for the world to learn about how women are seizing opportunity!

Part 1 of the documentary airs at 9pm PST tonight, with Part 2 taking place at 9pm PST tomorrow {check your local listings here}.

The 4 hour segment will absolutely enlighten your day, week and year.

“Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide was filmed in 10 countries and follows Kristof, WuDunn, and celebrity activists America Ferrera, Diane Lane, Eva Mendes, Meg Ryan, Gabrielle Union, and Olivia Wilde on a journey to tell the stories of inspiring, courageous individuals. Across the globe oppression is being confronted, and real meaningful solutions are being fashioned through health care, education, and economic empowerment for women and girls. The linked problems of sex trafficking and forced prostitution, gender-based violence, and maternal mortality — which needlessly claim one woman every 90 seconds — present to us the single most vital opportunity of our time: the opportunity to make a change.” – Independent Lens | PBS

Youth Unemployment

Every so often an educational campaign blows me away…

Provocative — and moving. Absolutely love it.

United Colors of Benetton has rolled out a campaign addressing youth unemployment. They’re on a mission to bring awareness to the amount of jobless youth in the world and show the talent of the younger generation.

Within the campaign is a contest called “Unemployee of the Year.” It is open to unemployed youth, ages 18 to 30, from around the world. They are being challenged to submit ideas for projects that will improve lives in their communities — a surefire way to creating positive change!!  The 100 projects with the most votes will be given € 5000 each from the UNHATE Foundation.

The campaign is bound to create awareness on youth unemployment in our community, get people talking and get young people taking action.

Youth Unemployment Crisis

“In 2011, 74.8 million youth aged 15–24 were unemployed, an increase of more than 4 million since 2007. The global youth unemployment rate, at 12.7 per cent, remains a full percentage point higher than the pre-crisis level. Globally, young people are nearly three times as likely as adults to be unemployed. In addition, an estimated 6.4 million young people have given up hope of finding a job and have dropped out of the labour market altogether. Even those young people who are employed are increasingly likely to find themselves in part-time employment and often on temporary contracts. As the number and share of unemployed youth is projected to remain essentially unchanged in 2012, and as the share of young people withdrawing from the labour market altogether continues to rise, on the present course there is little hope for a substantial improvement in near-term employment prospects for young people.” – International Labour Organization

Bleak.

The amount of young people I know in our local community that are unemployed or under-employed is huge. In Vancouver, youth unemployment is at 14.3% {and that number has increased throughout the year}. Students and new graduates are encouraged to volunteer, take unpaid internships and work for minimum wage. Gaining experience is one thing — but I believe that many are forgetting about the generation gap and the huge problem our economy is going to have as the older generation retires.

Research shows that the world will need to create over 600 million more jobs in the next 10 years. 600 million. That’s a boat load.

Soon enough we’re going to have to forget about the education experience we ‘require’… and start training in-house, taking a leap and setting young people up for success. There is a lot to be said for drive, ambition and commitment — none of which are taking into consideration in typical recruiting processes.

Here’s what I know:

We need more young people in the workforce.

We need to believe in them.

We need to give them opportunities to develop their skill set — and shine.

High five to United Colors of Benetton for giving jobless youth a voice.

The Girl Effect

Today marks the first day of the Girl Effect blogging campaign.

What does this mean?

Tara Mohr is leading the charge and we’re on a mission to educate the planet on why we need to pay attention to girls! From October 4 to 11, 2011, men and women from around the world will be creating awareness on the Girl Effect.

Want to know more?

“The Girl Effect is a movement driven by organizations, individuals, and girl champions around the globe, harnessing the unique potential of adolescent girls to end poverty for themselves and the world. It is not about raising the profile of an organization or even raising money for a particular program. It’s about raising girls’ voices – it’s that simple.”

crunch time

Well… 12:21 am on Thursday night (Friday morning – depending on how you look at it) and still awake with hours of homework to tackle.  It’s that evil time of year when university group projects, final assignments, and exams all creep up on you and all of a sudden that feeling of being overwhelmed takes over.  I feel more pressure than usual because it’s my graduating semester. Yes, after seven – SEVEN – years of university… I’m done. T-15 days!

Everyday this week, I’ve thought about my blog. I’ve thought about all the things I really have been waiting to voice an opinion on and exciting (fabulous) things that I can share.  I’m solely writing to say… I’ll be back in a bit. I need to keep myself together over the next two weeks, managing both work and university in an effective and efficient manner… and I’m pretty sure that blogging doesn’t fit in the final exam week stretch plan.

When I’m back, stay tuned for… an update on the Beyond Pink conference and all that was learned… why I love Vancouver and the creative, love-filled Entrepreneurs I met along my journey… the benefits of Twitter chats [yes like #tchat ;)]… Calgary’s Campus Recruiting Forum… attaining my CHRP (Certified Human Resources Professional) designation… the long haul to graduation… tidbits on reflexology and a chlorophyll update… a solo Christmas… my 2011 present to myself… and some sort of summary of the year and plan for the next.

If you’re in university crunch time right now, my thoughts are with you.  Keep you head down – you’re almost there!! If you’re behind on holiday shopping, that’s quite unfortunate… I finished mine weeks ago. :D My tip to all of you… make a list and get everything done.  Spend some time this holiday season… just… enjoying.

With love. ❤

what makes a top employer – part 4 (success!)

On October 29th, I received an email from KPMG indicating that I won the national “What Makes a Top Employer” video contest!!! I was on my layover in San Fransisco en route to Tokyo and heard about a minute before I was supposed to board (which as per my previous blog post – fight was delayed a few more hours).  I couldn’t have been more thrilled!  I was absolutely giddy in the SFO airport wishing that I could tell someone (I was on roaming), and unfortunately I couldn’t resist. I likely have a hefty bill from the international texts and calling.

[Disregard the spelling error in KPMG's tweet ;)]

Representatives from KPMG were completely flexible with the fact that I was on my way to Tokyo and rather unavailable due to the conference I was attending.  We agreed to chat upon my return and finalize all the details.

KPMG recently went live with a summary of the competition:

On November 9th, TalentEgg.ca wrote an article on the competition.

—————————————————————————————————————–

If you missed seeing my original submission to KPMG’s contest, feel free to view here:

And on October 3rd, I posted an additional video to “engage” ;) the viewers.

—————————————————————————————————————–

I ended up connecting with KPMG late this week and they are currently working on the finding a date for me to connect with the 5 CEO’s.  In the near-ish future, I will have a 1 hour meeting with the following well-respected and successful CEO’s:

  • Bill Thomas, CEO of KPMG Canada, as the sponsoring company
  • Nadir Mohamed, President & CEO of Rogers Communications
  • Cameron Heaps, Co-founder of Steam Whistle Brewing Company
  • Bruce Poon Tip, Founder (AKA “The Captain”) of Gap Adventures
  • Colin Moore, President of Starbucks Coffee Americas

This means a trip out to Toronto and a whole lot of opportunity!

From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone for your support during this competition.  In 30 days, WE reached 661 votes, and over 2,169 viewings.  In 30 short days, you all listened to what I had to say about the future of work.  In 30 days, I saw the power of social media, with votes, tweets (retweets), facebook posts, and online discussion.  In 30 short days, you gave me opportunity.

Thank you for your continual commitment. Ahh it gives me absolute warm fuzzies to know I have people in my court, rooting for me every ounce of the way. I absolutely have *big* plans for 2011, stay tuned for how the CEO meetings go and for the next steps with my career.

With all my heart. ❤

top employer update

Today I received this:

“I am one of the representatives of the What Makes a Top Employer Contest. I called you this morning to deliver the news that you are one of the 3 finalists for the What Makes a Top Employer contest. You are now in the running with two others to have the chance to win 5, 1 hours meetings with 5 of Canada’s top CEOs.”

These 5 judges will be viewing my video next week:

  • Bill Thomas, CEO of KPMG Canada, as the sponsoring company
  • Nadir Mohamed, President & CEO of Rogers Communications
  • Cameron Heaps, Co-Founder of Steam Whistle Brewing Company
  • Bruce Poon Tip, Founder (AKA “The Captain”) of Gap Adventures
  • Colin Moore, President of Starbucks Coffee Americas
  • As per a recent KPMG news release:

Two sets of prizes will be awarded to students in appreciation for their time and effort.

The first prize wins an Apple iPad and five individual one-on-one mentoring sessions with the CEOs.  The first prize will go to the student with the best video response—the most insightful, thoughtful, and useful video. The winner will be chosen from a short list of individuals who will be judged by the five CEOs. The second prize winner—the student whose video wins by popular vote—will also receive an Apple iPad.

    Fingers crossed everybody!

what makes a top employer – part three and a half

On October 10th, I blogged. It was my third blog post regarding KPMG’s What Makes a Top Employer video contest.  In that post, I said that I would update again once the competition was over.

Tonight, I received a message from Chris, my brother-in-law:

“dear jill… today i haven’t voted for you because you haven’t put any effort into your site lately (blog)… lets see a post.” xxchris

    Well… apparently I haven’t been doing a good job.

Chris this is for you.  There has been a lot going on in my world as of late and I apologize for not keeping up with my blog.

The time to vote is now.

    Love Jill XO

PS – To the rest of you, the KPMG competition ends tomorrow – yes tomorrow at 11:59pm EST.  If you haven’t voted today, please do! Then tomorrow – again!! Then guess what, we’re finally done.

    Thank gosh eh?

PPS – In other news, I went to a birthday party for a 9 year old friend of mine named Paige.  It was intense.  14 girls were in attendance.  Paige asked me to get her a puppy for her birthday… and I didn’t.  Bad me. :)

PPS – Marley, I’m still working on your letter.  My goal is to get it mailed before I leave for Japan. ❤

what makes a top employer – part 3

This blog post will be Part 3 of a series of 4 posts related to KPMG’s competition on “What Makes a Top Employer“.

On September 20th, I blogged about the competition, how to register and vote, and why I wanted to share my voice.  I encouraged you to watch my video (and the others) and decide if I was worthy of your vote.  On September 28th, I blogged because I had hit a milestone, 1000 views!!  I had been asked how I would continue to engage the voters, as 30 days is a heck of a long time to vote daily.  A few days later, I uploaded this video to YouTube:

The video continues to align with my Top Employer vision, but won’t count towards official votes on KPMG’s contest website.  As you can tell, I did the ABC’s of “What Makes a Top Employer” [it's ok to start laughing now...], I knew creativity and humor would be critical for engagement.

We are now 8 days away from the end of the competition.  I am currently in 3rd place, with 431 votes and 1631 views.  The young woman in 1st place has a 30-day video upload advantage on me; as a result, I’ve decided my goal is to get to 2nd place before the contest ends on October 18th, 2010 at 11:59PM EST.

If you have yet to engage in this competition, I will plead with you to do so.  At the end of the day, this has nothing to do with votes or who is the “winner.”  As I’ve said, I believe this competition is about impact.  The impact that we, as young people, can have on future leaders and potential employers.

If you would like to vote, please visit my video contest entry here:

    VOTE HERE

I will update again post-competition with the final tally on votes and views.  The judges are expected to make a decision on the winners by November 5th, 2010.

    With all my love. ❤
